Algy slept on through the moonlit night, and now he dreamed that he was sitting in the surf as the waves rolled in from the ocean, watching the breakers dance on the shore in an endless procession as they gently covered his legs with a soft, white blanket of salty sea foam…

Before long, the repetitive sound of the waves pounding on the shore and the rustling of the wet sand being sucked back into the sea put Algy to sleep. And as he slept, the full moon rose up from behind the ridge and bathed the whole world in a cold blue light – and Algy dreamed that the waves grew brighter and brighter, and splashed higher and higher, until they started to wash right over him…

The days grew shorter and cooler, and the wind swung round to the south-west, bringing moist, salt-laden air straight from the ocean to blow into Algy’s face. The sea was no longer in a bright, summery mood, but petulant and erratic, churning and splashing against the rocks with considerable force. Algy perched just above the splash line, and watched the waves roll in one after another. He could hear the crash of the breakers on the beach and the gravelly, slurping sound as the sea sucked the sand back under the water each time a wave retreated. It was a fine show, but it was undoubtedly autumn now, and it would be a long, long time until summer came again…

HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY PWS!

Algy heard that his special friends at PWS were celebrating their 2nd birthday – and he also heard that it was Oktoberfest time 🙂 So he got out the balloons in proper Oktoberfest style to help you celebrate your birthday. Algy thanks you all for your kindness, your wonderful support for his adventures (and Sunday Selfies!), and your Tumblr friendship over the past two years, and sends everyone at PWS lots of very special and exceedingly fluffy hugs. He hopes that PWS will go on for ever, as it’s his favourite photo reblogging site of all time xoxo

Yes, indeed, it’s Oktoberfest and one third of PWS actually (and obvioulsy) was there already. Thank you so very much for your more than lovely words and this beautiful submission! Lots of fluffy hugs!

PWS – Photos Worth Seeing

Algy is so happy to see that photosworthseeing are getting so many wonderful contributions and comments on this occasion of their 2nd birthday. He was glad that he was able to join in the fun 🙂

The season had definitely changed. When Algy woke up in the morning he felt a new but only-too-familiar chill in the air, and he found that the wind had developed extra teeth. It was undoubtedly autumn… but despite a very wet morning, the sun came out in the afternoon, so Algy hurried down to the beach, to watch the sea in its autumnal mood and to listen to the new sounds of the changing season as the strong south-westerly whistled through his feathers, blowing all the warmth of summer far away.

Algy has some beautiful Scottish heather for you! He can show you something of what it looks like, but he wishes that he could also send you the fragrance, because the heather smells of honey 🙂

As he perched in the heather bush, inhaling the sweet perfume, Algy thought about the changing seasons. The swallows and sand martins
had already left, and some of the leaves were beginning to turn. It was the autumnal equinox, and from now on the nights would be longer than the days. In this northern land, the days had already shortened dramatically, and before very long the hours of darkness would last from late afternoon until after breakfast-time, and the winter gales would start to batter Algy’s home again. It was time to start collecting dry leaves and flowers to line his nest for the winter!

Algy has his very own rock garden, just a stone’s throw from his
nest. It lies between the cliff face and the sea, and it’s full of
flowers and low shrubby bushes which grow all higgledy-piggledy among
the rocks. It is not much to look at in the cold, dark months, when the Atlantic storms batter the
coast, but in the late summer and very early
autumn it is in its glory, with beautiful ling and bell heather to
tempt the bees and other insects with the fragrance of honey, and many
late-flowering wildflowers, most of them in shades of purple or
creamy-white. Green mosses and ferns grow in the deep, dank hollows
between the rocks, and along the concealed burn which runs down to the
sea there is a large swathe of aromatic bog myrtle. It’s a beautiful
spot, and if the weather should happen to be fine, Algy spends many
happy hours among the flowers in his garden, inhaling the fragrance and
admiring the view.

Algy wishes you all a happy Sunday afternoon and evening  xoxo

It was a fine, warm autumn afternoon, so Algy tucked himself down into the long grasses and rested. In the quiet and peaceful environment of his remote home on the wild west coast of Scotland, he was thinking of all his wonderful Tumblr friends, dispersed in so many different places around the world: old friends and new friends, young friends and old friends, healthy friends and sick friends, urban friends and country friends. So many different people, with so many different experiences…

Algy knows that many of you live busy and sometimes even stressful lives, with many different challenges to face. So he sends you all his fluffiest hugs, and hopes that you will all take some time this weekend just to rest awhile:

Come, rest awhile, and let us idly stray
In glimmering valleys, cool and far away.

Come from the greedy mart, the troubled street,
And listen to the music, faint and sweet,

That echoes ever to a listening ear,
Unheard by those who will not pause to hear

The wayward chimes of memory’s pensive bells,
Wind-blown o’er misty hills and curtained dells.

One step aside and dewy buds unclose
The sweetness of the violet and the rose;

Song and romance still linger in the green,
Emblossomed ways by you so seldom seen,

And near at hand, would you but see them, lie
All lovely things beloved in days gone by.

You have forgotten what it is to smile
In your too busy life; come, rest awhile.

[Algy is quoting the poem Come, rest awhile by the late 19th/early 20th century Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery.]
