Whence these stories?

It had been a long, long, dreary summer, and Algy had often found himself hopelessly lost in the dense Scotch mist which smothered the land and the sea, blown hither and yon by the gales and drenched by the persistent rain, but as the world turned and the wind swung round to the north at last, a bitter squall from the arctic swept down across the ocean and drove all before it as it chased the clinging mists away. And when the wind finally dropped the sun came out and lit up the land in all its autumn glory, and Algy found himself safely at home once more… Tired but happy, he picked a comfortable spot on a bed of drying grasses and fallen leaves, and settled down comfortably in the sunshine to enjoy the unusual luxury of a quiet afternoon’s reading:

Should you ask me, whence these stories?
Whence these legends and traditions,
With the odors of the forest,
With the dew and damp of meadows,
With the curling smoke of wigwams,
With the rushing of great rivers,
With their frequent repetitions,
And their wild reverberations,
As of thunder in the mountains?
I should answer, I should tell you,
“From the forests and the prairies,
From the great lakes of the Northland,
From the land of the Ojibways,
From the land of the Dacotahs,
From the mountains, moors, and fenlands
Where the heron, the Shuh-shuh-gah,
Feeds among the reeds and rushes.

[Algy is reading the famous opening lines from The Song of Hiawatha by the 19th century American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow]

Christmas Reading…

Algy-reading-Midwinter-Star-to-teddy-for-011217.jpg

It was the first day of December, and the hours of daylight had grown very short indeed. Each new day dawned more slowly and reluctantly than the previous one now, but as soon as there was sufficient light Algy found himself a comfortable perch in a pine tree and settled down to read his very own Christmas-time story The Magical Midwinter Star to his little black teddy. The tiny bear was thrilled to hear the tale of Algy’s adventures through the harsh midwinter landscape of the West Highlands of Scotland, and he wondered whether Algy would indeed succeed in restoring the ancient tradition of a great midwinter celebration for all the creatures of the area, to bright light and joy back to the dismal depths of the dark and gloomy Scottish winter…

This third story in the series Tales from the Adventures of Algy makes perfect reading for the weeks leading up to Christmas – for children aged 7 to 10 and adults still young at heart. You can buy copies of The Magical Midwinter Star signed by Algy himself, direct from Algy’s own web shop, and add personal dedications in your own words. With FREE UK DELIVERY from now until Hogmanay.

World Book Day… in the UK…

Adventures-of-Algy-020317.jpg

World Book Day is celebrated on 23rd April in most countries of the world, but not in the idiosyncratic “UK”, because there the 23rd April is reserved for St. George, the patron saint of England…

However, as Scotland (whose own patron saint is St. Andrew not St. George) is still officially part of the UK at the present time, Algy thought that it provided as good an excuse as any to spend a happy afternoon reading in the sunshine 🙂 So he tucked himself in among the spiky grasses on the warm sand dunes, and opened his book of “Poems of the Sea”. Just a hop and a flutter away in front of him, Algy could see the waves dancing and sparkling on the beach, with the whole expanse of the wide, blue ocean with its mysterious world beneath, and as he turned back to his book he read:

The world below the brine,
Forests at the bottom of the sea, the branches and leaves,
Sea-lettuce, vast lichens, strange flowers and seeds, the thick tangle, openings, and pink turf,
Different colors, pale gray and green, purple, white, and gold, the play of light through the water,
Dumb swimmers there among the rocks, coral, gluten, grass, rushes, and the aliment of the swimmers,
Sluggish existences grazing there suspended, or slowly crawling close to the bottom,
The sperm-whale at the surface blowing air and spray, or disporting with his flukes,
The leaden-eyed shark, the walrus, the turtle, the hairy sea-leopard, and the sting-ray,
Passions there, wars, pursuits, tribes, sight in those ocean-depths, breathing that thick-breathing air, as so many do,
The change thence to the sight here, and to the subtle air breathed by beings like us who walk this sphere,
The change onward from ours to that of beings who walk other spheres.

[Algy is reading the poem The World Below the Brine by the 19th century American poet Walt Whitman.]

imiging:

5th March 2015, World Book Day…  and Algy had hoped to spend the day outside, reading in the open air. But in the event it did nothing but rain, rain, rain the entire day, and reading in the rain is far from ideal… for the books! What was he to do? Algy consulted his assistant, and she suggested that he recall a happier time spent reading, when the weather was much kinder – about six months ago. So in honour of World Book Day, Algy presents this reworked version of a reading Adventure he enjoyed in September 2014, when he was lazing in his assistant’s deckchair in the sunshine, searching for a favourite poem in a volume of verse.Happy Reading Everyone 🙂 And Algy hopes that you will find some nice, warm sunshine to read in, and will not try reading in the rain!

It’s one of Algy’s favourites too, and was photographed at this time of year… in much better weather than Algy is enjoying today!

Algy had had quite enough of the outside world for the time being, and although the wind had died down for a wee while, there was nasty, cold sleet falling non-stop out of the dismally grey sky. So – as electriticy supplies had been restored to the local area – Algy asked his assistant if he could please spend the day in her cosy, warm house, and check the proof of the new colour paperback version of his latest book The Tree with a Golden Heart.

Some of Algy’s friends have received a complimentary greyscale copy of this paperback from the first test print run – that is, a paperback with small, black and white images at the head of each chapter. If you are one of those friends, and would like a copy with large colour pictures at the head of each chapter, please be sure to let Algy know! He will be very happy to send you one 🙂

All copies of the paperback edition of The Tree with a Golden Heart on sale at Amazon and other bookshops should be in colour.

You can preview the first chapter of the book on Algy’s own web site at http://adventuresofalgy.com/books/the-tree-with-a-golden-heart, where you can also buy a signed copy direct from Algy 🙂

Although it was cold, grey and very damp, with a touch of frost on the grass, it was also unusually calm, so Algy carried his friend the little black teddy to a comfy perch on a low, spreading branch of the big fir tree, and read him the story of The Tree with a Golden Heart – the latest in the series of Tales from the Adventures of Algy.

The West Highlands were enjoying an unusually warm spell of autumn weather, and Algy felt comfortably lazy. As he was flying around his friends’ garden, he spotted an invitingly vacant deck chair, so he decided to take advantage of it while no-one was looking. He settled down in the soft sunshine with one of his favourite volumes of verse, but he just couldn’t seem to find the poem he was looking for…

Have a wonderful, peaceful and relaxing weekend, everybody :-))
