It was also lilac time in his friends’ garden, and Algy loves lilacs perhaps best of all the flowering shrubs. So he settled himself among the lovely pannicles of flowers and dozed off contentedly in the bright sunshine, drinking in the heady lilac scent. Some lines from T. S. Eliot’s poem Portrait of a Lady drifted through his mind:

Now that lilacs are in bloom
She has a bowl of lilacs in her room
And twists one in her fingers while she talks.
“Ah, my friend, you do not know, you do not know
          What life is, you who hold it in your hands”;
          (Slowly twisting the lilac stalks)
“You let it flow from you, you let it flow,
And youth is cruel, and has no remorse
And smiles at situations which it cannot see.”
          I smile, of course,
          And go on drinking tea.
“Yet with these April sunsets, that somehow recall
My buried life, and Paris in the Spring,
I feel immeasurably at peace, and find the world
To be wonderful and youthful, after all.”

[Algy is thinking of the first stanza in part II of Portrait of a Lady by T. S. Eliot.]

It was apple blossom time and Algy was in high spirits. The blossom was so beautiful, and all around him there were bees buzzing from flower to flower, helping to make plenty of apples for him to eat in the autumn. No wonder he was happy! So he sang them an old popular song, which first made the “hit parade” nearly 100 years ago: I’ll be with you in apple blossom time …

[This song has been recorded many times over the years, but was especially popular in the mid-20th century. If you don’t know the song, try listening to one of these recordings: Jo Stafford with Nat King Cole on piano in 1946, Elliot Lawrence and his Orchestra also in 1946, or from 1941, The Andrews Sisters, who recorded the song several times. And here is one of the very earliest recordings, by Charles Harrison in 1920.]

When Algy woke up from his long sleep, he went immediately to inspect his own special patch of bluebells. Although he had seen many beautiful expanses of bluebells recently, he felt that his own were the loveliest of all.

Algy would like to dedicate his bluebells to all those kind friends and followers who have been watching his Adventures “out and about” over the past week, and leaving notes in his absence. He thanks you all very much, and alos sends a special fluffy wave to his new followers 🙂

Algy gave his feathers a good shake and set off to explore the garden. There were beautiful flowering shrubs everywhere, with bluebells carpeting the ground and tall trees overhead. He found a bush with bright yellow flowers which seemed to be especially fragrant, and perched there happily in the sunshine, listening to the other birds singing all around him.

Algy travelled on a little further, until he reached a spot overlooking the old castle in the great sea loch. Huge masses of golden gorse covered the headland, so he decided to make a bed out of the soft, perfumed flowers. That night Algy dreamed of a tropical island, full of the exotic fragrance of spiced coconut!

Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening, and Welcome!

At Christmas time a kind neighbour gave Algy a large bulb from Holland, and told him to plant it in a pot. Imagine Algy’s surprise when, a few months later, he found that this had happened! The amazing flowers were almost bigger than him!

So Algy would like to offer this spectacular plant to all his lovely followers and friends on Tumblr. Algy has been thrilled to gain many new followers recently, and thanks you all very much indeed 🙂  He is so pleased that you enjoy his adventures! And he is also very touched by the kindness and loyalty of his special Tumblr friends and older followers – he loves you all xxx

Algy is so happy to get all your messages and comments, and he wants you to know that he always tries to reply personally without delay, but sometimes he doesn’t quite manage to keep up with things, as it’s a wee bit difficult to type with fluffy wings. But he really loves to hear from you all, and will keep on answering your messages as quickly as he can 🙂 He also enjoys all your wonderful blogs, and thanks you very much for sharing all your beautiful images from around the world.

Have a lovely day, and enjoy your flowers!

Happy Easter!

The Easter Bunny brought Algy a very special Easter egg, and told him that he could keep on opening it for as long as he wanted to, providing that he put it back together again each time 🙂

Algy wishes all his friends everywhere a very Happy Easter, and hopes that you will all have a lovely, sunny, happy day xoxo

Today, one of Algy’s Tumblr friends is celebrating her birthday. So he made this special picture to say “Happy Birthday, allthingssoulful”, and to provide a little mid-winter colour to cheer up anyone who is sad or suffering from the February blues. He hopes that the wonderful fragrance of the flowers will reach Romania, and float all around the world 🙂
