When Algy perches in his tree on a spring evening in May or June, watching the ever-changing colours of the sky as the sun sinks into the sea, these are the sounds that he hears…

On this occasion it was also raining gently – you can just hear the pitter-patter in the background.

This is what Algy heard while he was sitting in his tree late in the evening, watching the red deer in the gloaming. It may not seem very exciting to you, but in Britain this is a very rare sound these days, and Algy is privileged to be hearing it. (The background whooshing sound is not the wind, but the sound of the sea on the rocks in the distance.)

{Algy suggests that you increase the volume and listen through headphones or speakers for the best effect.}

Mr. Blackbird was in very good voice this evening, and entertained Algy for some time with a long series of songs. On the crofts, the sheep were chiding their lambs, and in the background Algy could hear some of the other birds chattering to one another.

{The sound will be clearest through headphones or external speakers.}

As Algy sat in his tree in the Scotch mist, trying to read his book, he could hear another of the newly arrived summer visitors calling to him in the distance, above the sound of the wind and the drizzling rain.

{This audio was recorded at a low level in rather difficult conditions! Algy suggests you increase the volume and listen through headphones or speakers for the best effect.}

Inside the big, dark shed, Mrs. Blackbird was sitting on the nest which her husband had built for her in the top of a wee basket on a shelf. Meanwhile, her husband sang all day long at the top of Algy’s tree, to make sure that everyone knew what a fine fellow he was. Algy flew up to join him, and to listen to the song.

Mr. Blackbird spent all day singing in Algy’s tree, while his wife sat quietly on the nest he had built in the top of a wee basket inside the big shed. His song sounded something like this …

While Algy was reading his book of verse in the birch tree, a blackbird nearby was providing his own opinion of the spring.

Listen to the West Highland birds rehearsing their spring songs to the accompaniment of the south-westerly wind, as Algy reads his book of verse beside the first snowdrops of the year.

As Algy bathed in his puddle, he listened to the pitter-patter of the rain falling around him and the twittering of the other birds in the trees.

{You may need to turn up the volume if you are listening through built-in computer speakers.}

Audio recording of the sounds Algy heard while reading his volume of Baudelaire in the misty morning of 4th December 2012. He could just hear the background roar of the sea on the rocks in the distance, while all around him the other birds were chattering and flapping about their business. The robin was singing some of his winter tunes especially for Stephanie 🙂

[Algy apologizes for the occasional crackles and peaks in the sound. He has a new recording device which he hasn’t quite mastered yet …]
